Frames

I should reframe

This is a quick example of how we can reframe the things that might at first glance seem daunting or negative, to be more achievable or pleasant.

Being able to reframe can be a really useful tool to have at your fingertips as it's often just the way we have learned to think about the various tasks and situations in our lives that create the feelings we feel and subsequently the things we think.

Complete the following statements

I should….

I should….

I should….

I should….

I should….

Now, change the word should to could and complete the task again

I could....

I could....

I could....

I could....

I could....

Doesn’t that feel different? Just changing one little word changes the whole feel of the sentence doesn’t it? It seems to take a little bit of the pressure off and makes the task seem less challenging.

Consider the examples below as they show how situations can be reframed.

Example:

The woman having to commute an hour each way to work on a train.  For a person who is time challenged this would cause high frustration and negative emotion everyday, until she realised that she firstly had a choice, she could get another job, but she didn’t want to do that as she really loved her job. So she decided to put the time to good use. She used those two hours each day to journal, listen to music, read and before long she felt time rich as she had decided to think differently about the time and used it to her advantage.

Another example:

The man who believes he will never be fit. He berates himself about his bad diet and how lazy he is because he only gets to the gym once a week. In his current state of thinking about himself, he appears defeatist and negative. But a simple shift in the way he thinks about himself and his approach to his lifestyle could just give him enough of a push to see some improvements. By simply changing his mind-set to be a bit kinder to himself, he can change the way he thinks about himself.. ‘I take everyday at a time and am doing the best I can at this time with regard to my health and well-being. I am getting to the gym once a week and I am sure I can increase this to twice a week. I am becoming more and more conscious of my diet and know I can make some changes to improve it’
